These dedicated fans were originally a sci-fi cult following of the cancelled Joss Whedon series, however it seems like the longer the show has been cancelled the more fans it gains! The series Firefly didn’t even finish 1 season before Fox cancelled it. The name ‘BrownCoats’ comes from within the series, it is the name given to the Independent Faction who fought against the Alliance.
Popular ‘ships’ of this fandom are Mal/Inara and Kaylee/Simon Tam. These are left unresolved in the unfinished series but are perpetuated in the film ‘Serenity’ which Whedon directed as an extension of the TV series.
The strength of this fandom comes from their united hope that one day the space cowboy Captain Mal Renolds and the rest of the crew of Firefly will return to the small screen.
