The internet’s response to this political ComedyCentral show came as a surprise to more than a few, and it has produced a fandom which is politically aware, socially conscious and informed. Although Jon Stewart and The Daily Show may have more traditional viewers Colbert’s spinoff has granted him a personal army of nearly 4 million Twitter followers. The fans not only exist on twitter but on all social media platforms and they have lovingly been titled ‘The Colbert Nation’.
The Colbert Nation’s loyalty and dedication has allowed this political satirist to rig internet competitions, alter opinion polls and they have even succeeded in placing him on Time Magazine’s annual “Time 100 list” of influential people. As well as this the internet power of Colbert has also succeeded in naming a treadmill on the International Space station.
However, not all the internet activities of The Colbert Nation are centred on its host with continued donations to charities extending into the hundreds of thousands and Colbert’s own parody Super- PAC (political action committee) netting more than $1.02 million dollars, which he has recently dissolved and donated the money to various charities.
