This is potentially the most popular TV series ever, Star Trek has even been credited with creating the ‘fandom culture’ back in 1966 The live-action TV series, five spinoff TV series, eleven feature films, novels, comics, video games, are nothing compared to the endless supply of fan fiction and fan created content.
Trekkies were the first fans able to influence the direction of their favourite show, successfully convincing the NBC to run a third and final season. This letter campaign appears to be the foundation of the more recent example of Arrested Development. Even more impressive than a successful letter campaign is the fanaticism of its fans with some anthropologists labelling the ‘cult’ fandom a true cult in its own right.
This fandom isn’t without the competitive tone seen in many others, however the longevity of the trekkies and the culture they’ve created has allowed for a mutual respect within the fandom. One of the common aspects of this fandom is the regular attendance at ‘cons’  with fans dressing up as all sorts of the characters long before it was called ‘cosplay’. Other common aspects are the Kirk-Spock “slash” fan-fiction, numerous memes, and the internet’s adoration for William Shatner who plays the eminent Captain James T. Kirk.
