True Blood (HBO)

Twi-hards beware: True blood is about vampires, but not as you know them. Twi-hards beware; there is no secrecy, no abstinence, and the only glitter that turns up in this series might be on some tightly stretched hot-pants worn at Fangtasia, the local vampire nightclub. The series, created by Alan Ball and based around the books of Charlaine Harris, is based around the concept that human blood has been synthesized. The Japanese company who invented the blood subsequently calls it ‘True Blood’, starting vampires on their path to assimilation into human society as they no longer have to drink human blood and hide their identities. Not only does True Blood have vampires, but as the series progresses, werewolves, faeries and a host of other creations start to emerge, as well as a strong focus on sex and danger. Sookie Stackhouse is the protagonist; she’s a waitress in a little, old American town called Bon Temps who lives with her grandmother and brother. She’s a special lady with a special talent; she listens to people’s thoughts, but doesn’t know why or how it’s possible. The series starts to get interesting when she meets Bill, an 173 year old vampire, whose thoughts she can’t hear.
